Sil and the Fading World, developed and published by IceCrack Games, is a third-person hack-and-slasher described as a single-player raiding action-rpg. That's a lot of hyphens. 😄 And what's up with that developer name, are they selling some kind of blue meth? I'm totally kidding. I like it.
You can only play as one of the classes in the demo. It was melee focused and Rogue-like if you're familiar with mmorpgs. I had uninstalled it before remembering to write the names of the classes and specializations down. There was the rogue and a shaman and I forget what the third was. There is a small glimpse at the Class Masteries and talent tree. Since you can only play as the one class, about half of one of the skill trees was locked for the demo. There were three different skill tree type mechanics and I also forgot to write those down before uninstalling. You don't have many builds to really choose from but I was okay with that for a demo. It's a nice preview.
There were two "main"-ish bosses in the demo, the final one being a lot more powerful than I was expecting. There were also a few mini-bosses. When I came across the first real boss I thought it was neat and well done. Then I encountered the final boss and was extremely impressed. The final boss had three different phases! That was when I could understand why the game would be compared to World of Warcraft or MMO's in general.
At first, Sil and the Fading World kind of plays like a 3D version of the auto-attack survivor genre games with a mix of Diablo-like fast-paced action and lots of loot. Once I encountered the two main bosses of the demo was when I felt like this is something special. I already thought it was cool and fun, but then I was like, oh my, I want this game.
I am hoping the HUD and interface will get some artistic updates. I spoke on my general thoughts of game HUDs and interfaces in my impressions of Titan Quest II's demo. It's always nice to have options in games that allow us to remove HUD elements such as the damage meter, or even to be able to customize the HUD with a smaller mini-map, smaller combo points and skill icons and so on. I'm just mentioning these things to have em out there. I am not complaining that this was not a thing in the demo.
There's no release date currently set for Sil and the Fading World. I look forward to seeing how the game gets polished up. Check out the demo and let me know what you think. Thanks for reading. Game on.
