Traveler's Refrain, a gorgeous musical ARPG, Launches on April 11th for PC

Traveler's Refrain, developed by Red Essence Games and published by Indie.io, is a story driven action-rpg with hand painted art where you play as a modern day bard who seeks to re-unite with his lost love.

The main gameplay here looks to be a top-down twin-stick hack-and-slasher which I usually enjoy. There's also a musical aspect to the gameplay where you'll need to press buttons or keys at correct timing and placement to receive buffs to your combat, or something. I'm not sure how exactly it works as I haven't played it yet and don't have more specific details at this time as to how the music element fully works in combat. It looks cool.

The music you control outside of combat in Traveler's Refrain will be used for altering environments and manipulating objects to solve puzzles. The developer also says that the soundtrack is customizable based on what types of skills and items you equip. I look forward to checking out how that works.

Traveler's Refrain features voice acting by musicians such as Essenger, Alexandra Norton of Echos, Andy Cizek of Monuments, and Lee McKinney of Born of Osiris. I'm not familiar with most of these but I recognized Essenger right away. I enjoy their music. Now I have some other music to check out as well.

The Red Essence Games team was formed by long-time friends, Arman Ayrapetyan, game programmer, and Nik Hagialas, game artist, who has previously done work for Disney and D&D. I really dig the art a lot. It's gorgeous.

Traveler's Refrain launches on April 11th, 2025 for PC. I don't know if there are plans for console versions at this time. Apparently there was a demo at some point but it's not available right now. It might have been up during one of the indie fests. I'm grateful for the extremely rare times when the algorithms work for me. This is one of those times. I saw the recommended video and checked it out. I'd rather destroy algorithms altogether but whatevs. This game looks super cool to me. Thanks for reading. Game on.
